I was asked by Cami what my job was and what I'm going to school for. So I thought that I would write a blog about it.
My job and what I'm working towards in school are very different. Right now I am working at Mueller's Chapel of the Falls Funeral Home in Kennewick, Washington. I know what you are thinking when you read that... "she puts makeup on dead people!" No that's not the case at all. I am an office manager here at this building and deal only with paperwork and the living relatives of the deceased. I was really scared when I accepted the job that it wouldn't fit with my personality and that I would have to change my personality to "fit in" with the mood that you typically think belongs at a funeral home. But that's not the case at all and I'm so happy because the people that I work with are amazing.
The majority of the people that I work with are LDS. The funeral directors are the ones that do the initial meeting with the family and get all the information and choosing their selections and everything to do with the deceadants. I then step in and write up the death notice for the newspaper, type in the information for the death certificate and then do any of the accounting that comes with a service of this type (submit obituaries, get memorial folders and memorial book ready, file the death certificate with the health depart. and so on). I enjoy my job and a lot of the time I'm the only one here in the building so the walls get to enjoy my singing at the top of my lungs sometimes to keep me awake when it's slow. I also enjoy dancing and running here at work when things are slow and I am trying to find things to do. I enjoy helping the families and making the process as smooth as possible on my end of things. I try to do everything I can for them and more sometimes. I enjoy hearing stories about their families and being able to serve them. I know that it's definately hard sometimes. Just a couple of weeks ago I had my first baby who had pasted away. That was really hard because he was the same age as Landon and had blonde hair too. I went home that night and bawled when I picked Landon up at daycare when he gave me a hug and told him he couldn't leave me. I don't enjoy the job always, but most of the time I do.
As for my schooling. I am going to school to become a medical coding/billing specialist and hopefully will be getting my associates in buisness administration. Hence the reason why I am taking this Medical Terminology class agian! The credits didn't transfer. :(
So that is it in a little nutshell. If you have any questions about my job I would be happy to answer them because I know that I asked a million questions in the first couple of weeks. I had always wondered, but never asked questions until I was working here. It is a unique job, but I seem to get some satisfaction from it when the family thanks me after the service, or when I find just the right song to match what they want to express or remember their family member by. It's a strange job to most because of the unknown, but I am enjoying it nonetheless.

I'm so glad you filled us in. I remember asking you in an email about your job and schooling also, but I don't think I ever sent the email. Darn drafts that never get sent. I am glad Cami asked.
Your job sounds really interesting. Maybe a bit emotional at times, but fulfilling in that you can help people through a hard time.
I am so amazed at you working, going to school and being a single mom. I just started the Medical Terminology class and I am really having to push myself to get it done. Thanks again for the spreadsheet.
Seriously, I think I need to get in on this medical terminology gig.
What a cool/sad job. Very interesting stuff. I'm glad the families have "sweet Autumn" to help them. You are perfect for that.
